What to Expect at a Dental Hygiene Student Clinic

A practical overview of supervised student clinic visits — timing, supervision, and what participating clinics may offer.

Published June 8, 2026

Student dental hygiene clinics operate as part of accredited training programs. Care is provided by students and overseen by qualified faculty — not as a substitute for emergency or specialist treatment.

Appointment length

Visits often take about 3 to 3.5 hours because assessments, preventive care, and documentation are completed under close supervision. Plan for a longer appointment than a typical private-practice cleaning.

Multiple visits

Depending on your oral health needs and the clinic program, you may need more than one appointment. The student clinician can explain recommended next steps after your first visit.

Before you arrive

Bring a list of medications, arrive on time, and follow any instructions sent by the clinic. If you need to cancel, use your patient account or contact the clinic according to their policy.
